2017-2018 China MTBE Market Annual Report

Annual Report Overview

2017–2018 China MTBE Market Annual Report

China’s MTBE market faltered forwards in 2017. In the first half of the year, MTBE plants were bogged into a stalemate in the circumstances of over-supply, exorbitant cost and weakening demand. The MTBE price was hung at a high level around RMB 5,000–5,500/mt due to the high cost. In the second half of the year, the international crude oil market and the domestic refined oil market both warmed up. Together with the restricted production under environmental protection supervision, the MTBE supply tightened, and the MTBE price rebounded. However, from the fundamental perspectives, on the one hand, the supply kept increasing, resulting in a severer market competition; on the other hand, despite the increase of gasoline consumption, the demand for MTBE decelerated due to the competition from new energy and other high-octane component oil products. Moreover, the feed gas deficit issue kept fazing the MTBE plants. Therefore, the margin of MTBE plants performed under-expected in 2017.

In 2018, China’s MTBE capacity will continue to grow. Even more, the MTBE unit enlargement will become mainstream. Large-scaled MTBE plants have major advantages in feed gas import, product sales, capital operation, etc., and they will further squeeze the living space of small and medium MTBE plants. How to obtain the inside track in the industry reshuffle? How to take the advantage position in the fiercer competition? Will the backward capacity elimination and gasoline standard upgrade bring a favorable turn to the MTBE market? The answers will be given in this report.
