Overall, China’s methanol market experienced intensification and industrialization in 2017. The market was stable-to-slipping in the first half of 2017 with the output shrinking obviously. Both the upstream and downstream industries were influenced by the strict environmental protection and safety production inspection. However, the average price of methanol in 2017 rose by a large margin compared with that in 2016. In Northwest China, the average price from January to July was RMB 2,130.38/mt, up 22.32% from the annual average price in 2016. In Jiangsu, the average price from January to July was RMB 2,657.50/mt, up 30.62% from the annual average price in 2016. From 2015 to 2017, China’s newly-added methanol capacity and downstream demand grew slowly. Meanwhile, the demand from the MTO/CTO industry increased notably, greatly influencing the supply and demand of methanol.

In the next 3–5 years, there are still newly-added units in China’s methanol and downstream industries. The upstream and downstream industries are gradually integrating, and the elimination of backward production capacity is continuing. It is predicted that China’s methanol price will fluctuate upwards in the next 3–5 years, and the trading will be more active. In 2017, newly-added 2,900kt/a methanol units have been put into operation in Shandong, so whether Shandong will remain as the traditional methanol receiving area? In Iran and the U.S., the new methanol units are scheduled to be put into operation from end-2017 to early 2018. Where the newly-added methanol resources will flow into?
