Highlights

In 2019, China’s LPG prices declined from 2018. Meanwhile, the international crude oil prices fluctuated downward, and the CP hovered at lows for months. Moreover, the LPG import volume rose. Accordingly, China’s LPG market prices did not satisfy the market expectation. Besides, China’s LPG market was driven by the supply-demand fundamentals, as the impacts from other factors weakened. Therefore, China’s LPG prices showed obvious seasonal characteristics and hovered at low levels.

In terms of the supply-demand fundamentals, there were some changes. Therein, China’s LPG supply grew steadily in 2019. On the one hand, With the refining-chemical integration projects at Dalian Hengli Petrochemical, PetroChina Guangdong Petrochemical, Zhejiang Petrochemical, etc. put into operation in succession, the competition pressure on China’s state-owned and independent refineries became severer, and the overall LPG output went up. On the other hand, there were many proposed and under-construction PDH projects in China, resulting in the increment in China’s LPG import volume. In terms of the downstream demand structure, and proportion of civil-use gas declined, but the descending speed slowed down. The improvement in the LPG demand was mainly concentrated in the deep-processing market. Moreover, supported by the refining-chemical integration, the overall industrial chain extended. Besides, with more captive-use LPG resources, the LPG resource allocation also changed. For example, the supply of olefin C4 became tighter, as the newly added alkylation units were put into operation in succession.
