Southwest China to See Its Largest Gas Power Plant Launch in March

On February 24, CHNG (China Huaneng) Chongqing Liangjiang Gas-Fired Power Plant Phase II successfully connected its Unit No.3 to the grid. The project is set to complete the commissioning of Unit No.3 by March 2025, with all units expected to be fully operational within the year. Once completed, it will become the largest natural gas clean energy power plant in Southwest China.

Phase II of the project, which began construction in May 2024, includes the installation of two H (J)-class gas-steam combined cycle units with a total installed capacity of 2×741.87 MW. The Phase I project, completed in 2014, includes 2×467.34 MW F-class combined cycle units. After the completion of Phase II, the plant’s total installed capacity will reach 2,418 MW, with an annual power generation capacity of approximately 10 billion kWh. The plant is expected to consume 2-2.5 BCM of natural gas per year.
