No.4 West-East Gas Pipeline Starts Operation with Transmission Capacity of 15 BCMa

On September 29th, a key project of the "14th Five-Year Plan" for oil and natural gas development in China - the No.4 West-East Gas Pipeline (Turpan-Zhongwei) Xinjiang section belonging to PipeChina - was completed and put into operation, namely, the Turpan-Hami section of the No.4 West-East Gas Pipeline.

The project officially started on September 28, 2022, and after it is put into operation, natural gas from Central Asia and the Tarim Basin oilfield in Xinjiang, China, will converge at the Turpan Contact Compression Station and be transported eastward after being pressurized.

After the first section is put into operation, it will be interconnected with the No.1, No.2, and No.3 lines networks. The annual transmission capacity of the West-East Gas Pipeline system will be increased from 77 BCM to 92 BCM.

The No.4 West-East Gas Pipeline is another strategic energy corridor connecting Central Asia and China after the first three lines of the West-East Gas Pipeline networks. It starts from the China-Kyrgyzstan border in Wuchang County, Xinjiang, through Lunnan, Turpan to Zhongwei in Ningxia, with a total pipeline length of about 3,340 kilometers. After the completion of the project, it will operate jointly with the No.2 & No.3 lines of the West-East Gas Pipeline. At that time, the annual transmission capacity of the West-East Gas Pipeline system will reach 100 BCM.

The No.4 West-East Gas Pipeline (Turpan-Zhongwei) is 1,745 kilometers long, with an annual designed gas transmission capacity of 15 BCM, which can reach 30 BCM after being pressurized. Among them, the Xinjiang section of the pipeline is 583 kilometers, starting from the Turpan Compression Station in Xinjiang and ending at the Yandun Compression Station in Hami.
