A Slight Decline in Jilin's Natural Gas Consumption during Jan-Aug

During the first eight months of 2024, Jilin Province's natural gas consumption experienced a slight decline compared to the same period in 2023. The natural gas market in Jilin Province is generally characterized by a decrease in production and an increase in imported pipeline natural gas. Changes in the supply structure indicate that Jilin is increasingly relying on external resources for natural gas supply.

From January to August 2024, the natural gas consumption in Jilin Province was 2.272 BCM, a 0.8% decrease from the 2.290 BCM during the same period in 2023. This minor decline is primarily related to the adjustment of the energy structure.

Jilin Province's 14th Five-Year Plan emphasizes the active development of non-fossil energy sources such as wind, solar, and biomass energy, aiming to reduce the consumption proportion of coal and oil. In the first half of 2024, Jilin Province achieved a GDP growth of 5.7%, which is well above the national average.

In terms of supply structure, during the first eight months of 2024, Jilin Province's natural gas production was 1.233 BCM, a decrease of 5.64% compared to the 1.306 BCM during the same period in 2023. At the same time, the volume of imported pipeline natural gas increased to 1.024 BCM, a year-on-year increase of 5.1%. The share of natural gas production in the total supply was 54.5%, while the share of imported pipeline natural gas was 45.5%. Compared to the same period in 2023, the production share has decreased by 6 percentage points, and the share of imported pipeline natural gas has increased by 6 percentage points.

Jilin Province, with 3.8 BCM of gas consumption in 2023, is located in the northeast China and is situated along the POS1. Due to resource limitations, there is an unstable expectation for future natural gas production. To ensure the supply of natural gas within the province, Jilin is addressing the potential reduction in gas field production by importing resources and increasing the construction of gas storage facilities.
