The import costs of natural gas fell back in 2023, as the supply-demand contradiction in the international natural gas market eased, greatly enhancing China’s LNG import. The supply pattern of China’s natural gas market saw changes accordingly. Natural gas consumption is expected to grow amid carbon peak and carbon neutrality strategy and the gradual recovery of the economy. The “14th Five-Year Plan” will be a period of policy implementation and will certainly promote the development of China natural gas market.

Bid trading for pipeline gas, window period utilization among LNG terminals, storage capacity trading, and NG trading among LNG plants are becoming more normalized. Cooperation between upstream and downstream energy companies is becoming more frequent. The competitions between LNG and pipeline gas are escalating. East China is the main natural gas consumption region, with many proposed receiving terminals under construction. It is predicted that newly-added LNG terminals will be intensively put into operation during 2023-2025, uplifting China’s LNG import capability.
