In 2024, the macroeconomic growth momentum was insufficient. The PO industry still faced the problem of supply increase caused by capacity expansion. New units adopting different production technologies were put into operation within the year. Output increased, while demand grew slowly, registering a prominent supply-demand imbalance. On the demand side, downstream industry capacity expanded, but the capacity growth was relatively limited. The polyether polyol industry still contributed most to the demand for PO. The main growth point of demand this year was from the propylene glycol industry, but the overall demand growth was slow. Profits were at a low level in the year. The impact of cost fluctuations on the PO industry deepened. In 2024, the PO price fluctuated downward with a narrower range. After the new units were put into operation in the first half of the year, it experienced frequent switches between startup and shutdown, so the output increment was limited. The arbitrage window between regions was opened in stages due to the intensive maintenance in southern China because some resources were diverted to the southern region for sales. In H2 of 2024, the capacity base will continue to enlarge, so the supply may increase further, indicating higher supply pressure. The demand increment may be not as high as the supply increment, which may weigh down the PO price.
