Highlights
In H1, 2024, although the international crude oil prices fluctuated within a wide range, China’s LPG prices saw slight fluctuations. In recent years, the seasonality of LPG fading away, and supply and demand fundamentals exerted more notable impacts on China’s LPG market. China’s LPG output rose steadily, but China’s LPG commercial volume shrank Y-O-Y, influenced by product structure adjustment and deep-processing capacity expansion. Therefore, China’s LPG import volume went up. From January to June 2024, China’s LPG import volume surpassed 14 million mt, up 12% Y-O-Y. The proportion of civil-use gas demand shrank notably, influenced by natural gas, electricity and other substitutes. The LPG deep-processing capacity kept expanding, lifting the demand for industrial-use gas. Therein, China’s PDH capacity has surpassed 20 million mt/a in 2024. Therefore, there were changes in supply-demand structure, logistics and transportation, market prices and strategies of sellers and buyers. In the future, the civil-use gas demand may shrink, and the demand from the deep-processing industry may improve. With deep-processing capacity expansion, there may be changes in supply-demand pattern of downstream products.
